Multi-Space is about the inner and outer Universes that we all intuitively know -- but which are completely unfamiliar to the intellectual Being within each of us.
In my Sculpture and flatwork, I carefully construct a unique language about these different universes by interweaving strong scientific and art backgrounds and experiences into visual statements. In order to express these multi-space ideas without confusion, a unique form is consistently maintained so that each work can be viewed as distinct language statements, which I develop in a cohesive manner - much like the mathematical theorems, which form the basis for the language of geometry.
And, much like the geometry format, the multi-space language starts from the most simple and fundamental visual statements and proceeds to more complex concepts and Universes.
This work has now explored many different Universes -- The Positive which we occupy. The Negative where all matter is reversed from the positive (solid is empty and empty is solid). The Null (or full) which combines both the Positive and Negative Universe. The Conceptual, wherein all matter is thought, and non-thought is empty space. The Moebius, where no inside or outside exists. And, as the work proceeds, new Universes appear and old ones combine to coexist.
Further, in these Universes, time is often defined as a basic coordinate replacing or coexisting with one or more of the volumetric coordinates -- so that motion actually exists in these visual images, regardless of the nature of the volumetric space they occupy. Or conversely, as in the case of the time slices, some images have no motion and are timeless.
The Sculpture is of many materials (aluminum, bronze, copper, steel, concrete, gypsum cements, plastics, waxes, etc.) and of many textures and finishes. The flatwork is mostly words developing images and concepts on paper, steel, wax, gypsum cements, etc.
Questions?
Are these Universes real? Can we occupy them? Can we measure and define them in a scientific way? Can we define their physical laws? And what if they can be defined and studied without our ability to occupy them in a physical sense? Will they then be real to you or to me? Will we then be able to occupy those non-occupyable Universes? How will that state of occupying manifest itself? |
